Default Alpha: Mapping the Emergence of Synthetic Culture in New Towns by Jesse Siegel is a literary bridge between two supposed cultural non-places. Cancun, Mexico, a popular tourism resort created as a planned New Town by the Mexican government to increase foreign tourism and Almere, a planned city created by the Dutch government to ease the housing concerns in Amsterdam. Both cities were only founded in the 1970s and in two vastly different countries. The book is a personal journey tracing the unlikely commonalities between both places.
